GURUDWARA SHRI NANAK GHAT SAHIB is situated in the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
SHRI GURU NANAK DEV JI and Bhai Mardana Ji reached Ujjain after traveling from the Girnar Mountains of Junagadh via Ahmedabad. The ancient name of Ujjain was Avantipur. It was located on the banks of the Avanti River, which is now known as the Shipra River. This city was a famous city of the ancient kingdom of Avanti. Raja Vikramaditya, after whom the Vikram Samvat calendar is named, was the king of Ujjain. Before him, Raja Bhartrihari renounced his kingdom and became a yogi, handing over the reign to his younger brother Vikramaditya. Bhartrihari's cave in Ujjain is still famous today. The Mahakal Temple here is considered a prominent pilgrimage site for Hindus.
In 1235 AD, Sultan Altutmish looted the temples of Ujjain. In the fifteenth century, a wall was built around the city for protection. When SHRI GURU NANAK DEV JI arrived here, the wall was still intact, and the old city was settled around the Mahakal Temple. Nowadays, the old city and the wall have both collapsed, and the city has been resettled in a new location. Bhartrihari's cave was located outside the city, and near the cave was a mosque with a tamarind tree in front of it. SHRI GURU NANAK DEV JI set up camp near this tree.
When Raja Bhartrihari learned of GURU SAHIB's arrival, he came to meet GURU SAHIB and asked him, "How many of the yogis who come here will attain liberation?" Hearing the hymn from SHRI GURU NANAK DEV JI, peace settled in Bhartrihari's mind, and all his doubts were dispelled.
